OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad defended its No. 10 national ranking today, turning away Miami (Ohio) by a 13-11 margin in a road exhibition.
The Skyhawks held an 8-4 advantage in the Western discipline, including five of six points in reining. UT Martin also added three points in horsemanship while tacking on five victories in Jumping Seat (three in flat, two in fences).
All four MOP's were awarded to the Skyhawks as Tyler Anderson (86 points in fences), Julia Gilman (79 points in flat), Natalie Armstrong (73.5 points in horsemanship) and Hannah McDonald (70.5 points in reining) each collected top honors.
McDonald's MOP victory ignited UT Martin in reining. Shelby Jackson posted a team-high score of 71.5 points on her way to the victory while Brooke Bradley (71 points) and Emily Zegiestowsky (70) also earned head-to-head wins. Armstrong also provided her second win of the day with a 66-point effort.
In horsemanship, Armstrong's MOP effort led the way for the Skyhawks. Also recording victories were Erica Snyder (68.5 points) and Jade Bleskey (65).
UT Martin received a lift from Gilman's 79-point MOP performance in flat. Katelyn Schultz also pieced together a remarkable ride with 85 points on her way to win, joining Mahalia Alascio (69 points) as winners in that event.
Anderson became the second Skyhawk freshman to earn MOP honors when she accomplished that feat in fences. Chloe Murt – another talented freshman – was also able to pick up a victory with a score of 82 points for UT Martin.
The Skyhawks return to action next week, as they will host South Dakota State and Delaware State on Oct. 10-11.
