WALLICK’S MATCH-HIGH 12 KILLS NOT ENOUGH AS UT MARTIN VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO SIUE
10/11/2019 9:02:00 PM | Volleyball
MARTIN, Tenn. – Logan Wallick was the only player on both sides to tally double-digit kills this evening but the University of Tennessee at Martin's offense stalled in a 3-0 setback (23-25, 16-25, 17-25) against SIUE in Ohio Valley Conference volleyball action.
Wallick's dozen kills were eight more than any other Skyhawk as UT Martin struggled to the tune of an .008 attack percentage. Kenzie Hinshaw barely missed a double-double (match-high 24 assists, nine digs) while the trio of Hannah Phillips (match-best 14 digs), Kayla Carrell (11 digs) and Justine Walker (match-high five blocks) led the Skyhawk defense.
Back-to-back kills by Phillips and Walker provided UT Martin with its first lead of the opening stanza. The Cougars scored eight of 11 points to take a 10-6 advantage before Wallick accounted for three consecutive kills to help trim the Skyhawk deficit to 14-13. After SIUE extended its lead out to six points late, UT Martin used a 6-1 run to get within a single point at 23-22. However, the Cougars called a timeout and scored a pair of points to close the set.
A block assist (by Wallick and Walker) and a service ace (by Hinshaw) evened the score early in the second set. SIUE followed with a 16-3 run to create some separation but the Skyhawks battled back, reeling off seven consecutive points as part of a 9-2 surge. UT Martin's run resulted in a manageable six-point deficit but the Cougars answered back with five of the next seven points to take a 2-0 match lead.
Karen Scanlon opened the Skyhawk scoring in the third set with a kill but SIUE managed to take a 5-1 advantage. Addison Conley delivered back-to-back kills to shave UT Martin's deficit to 6-4 but the Cougars once again went on an extended run, pushing their lead out to double figures (19-9). Gintare Mackeviciute, Jessica Reynolds and Wallick each contributed kills as part of a 6-2 Skyhawk run down the stretch but the Skyhawks ultimately wouldn't get any closer than six points the rest of the way.
UT Martin will look to bounce back tomorrow when it faces Eastern Illinois in an OVC showdown. First serve from Skyhawk Fieldhouse is set for 2 p.m.
