MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle squad wrapped up an impressive weekend at the Memphis Tiger Open to kick off the 2018-19 schedule.
Sophomore Jacob Osborne posted personal bests in both smallbore and air rifle as he fired scores of 558 and 579, respectively. Freshman Rachel Sprague also showed great promise over the weekend as she recorded a score of 570 in smallbore and 582 in air rifle.
Leading the way in smallbore was junior Kaitlin Korinek as she fired a score of 578. Sprague's score of 570, Osborne's score of 558 and Andre Delcalzo's score of 558 rounded out the smallbore firing for a team score of 2,264. Celia Gelpey also fired in the discipline as she recorded a score of 549.
Korinek also paced the team in air rifle as she recorded a score of 586 followed closely by Sprague's 582 and Osborne's 579. Gelpey also shot for the team in air rifle as she posted a score of 567 while the team produced a score of 2,314. Abigail Donald also fired in smallbore as she tallied a score of 564 in the discipline.
Also firing in the open were freshmen Rachel Mills (543 in smallbore and 547 in air rifle) and Tristan Grisham (535 in smallbore and 554 in air rifle).
"We had a very good day at the Memphis Tiger Open," head coach MJ Vowell said. "The team exceeded my expectations. Going into the match, I felt that we would be where we were with air rifle but I was a little concerned with smallbore, but the team put together a solid score and I feel that the team will gain momentum and get better. We had our four freshmen firing in their first collegiate match and they handled it well. Kaitlin led us in both categories followed right behind by freshman Rachel Sprague. I was very impressed with Jacob shooting his personal bests in both guns. The team is very positive and upbeat after our showing, and I feel that we gained a lot of ground during this first contest of the season."
The Skyhawks will head to Murray State on Sunday, Sept. 30 for a head-to-head matchup with the Racers.
