
OFFENSE GELS BUT UT MARTIN VOLLEYBALL COMES UP SHORT AGAINST AUSTIN PEAY, 3-1

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team hit .201 this morning against Austin Peay but the defending Ohio Valley Conference champions were too much for the Skyhawks in a 3-1 setback (23-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20).

Karen Scanlon and Hannah Phillips shared the team lead with 12 kills today, combining to hit .449 in 49 swing attempts. Megan Fair (nine) and Jessica Reynolds (eight) nearly cracked double-figures in the kill column for UT Martin while Kenzie Hinshaw tallied her eighth double-double of her sophomore campaign with 40 assists and 13 digs.

Defensively, Brooke Gyori and Fair both posted 14 digs while Scanlon and Phillips each had a hand in a team-best three blocks for the Skyhawks, who move to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Austin Peay (12-2, 2-0 OVC) led 5-2 in the opening set and eventually expanded its advantage out to 18-9 before UT Martin mounted a comeback. The Skyhawks went on an 11-3 run to close within one point at 21-20 but couldn't get over the hump as the Governors escaped with a 25-23 win. Scanlon accumulated four kills in four swings while Hinshaw was responsible for team-highs of 13 assists and four digs in the first set.

UT Martin came out blazing in the second set, scoring the first four points on its way to a 7-1 lead. Austin Peay trimmed a four-point deficit into a 15-14 lead midway through the set but it was all Skyhawks from there – as UT Martin posted 11 of the final 15 points. Phillips wrapped up the comeback and evened the match at 1-all with five kills and three blocks in the second stanza.

The Governors never trailed in the third set, racing out to a 5-2 lead. A kill by HInshaw closed the Skyhawk gap to one point as Reynolds also added a pair of late kills to keep UT Martin within striking distance. However, Austin Peay piled up six of the final eight points to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Fair and Maddi Noble each scooped up a team-best four digs in the third set for the Skyhawks.

The fourth set featured nine ties and three lead changes. Jamie Rys began the set with a pair of kills as UT Martin opened up a 4-1 advantage. The score was tied at 13-all before the Governors unreeled six unanswered points. Back-to-back kills by Reynolds and Scanlon made the score 21-18 but the Governors held off a Skyhawk rally. Fair's five digs paced UT Martin in the final stanza.

The Skyhawks open up a three-match road swing next weekend when it travels to OVC rivals SIUE on Friday, Sept. 28 and Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 29.
