
EARLY MOMENTUM NOT ENOUGH FOR UT MARTIN VOLLEYBALL IN 3-1 LOSS AT SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team cruised to a victory in the first set but unfortunately SIUE stormed back to win the final three stanzas in a 3-1 setback (25-22, 30-32, 15-25, 18-25) this evening.

Brooke Gyori commanded the Skyhawks (7-9, 1-2 Ohio Valley Conference) defensively this evening, going off for a career-high 32 digs. Kenzie Hinshaw (36 assists, 16 digs) provided her ninth double-double of the 2018 campaign while Jamie Rys was the only UT Martin player in double-figures in the kill column with a career-best 13 rally killers tonight.

The Skyhawks started out on the right foot after a late surge propelled the visitors to a 1-0 advantage. Justine Walker had three of UT Martin's first four kills as the Skyhawks opened up a 15-13 lead. The Cougars briefly claimed a lead but UT Martin broke a 19-19 tie with a 6-3 run to round out the stanza as Gintare Mackeviciute provided the final three kills of the set. Gyori came away with seven digs to lead the Skyhawks in the opening stanza.

The marathon second set provided 22 tie scores and seven lead changes before SIUE outlasted UT Martin. The Cougars led 10-7 before a 6-1 Skyhawk run gave UT Martin a two-point advantage. The back-and-forth action continued as each team had four different opportunities for set point until SIUE finally evened the match with back-to-back kills. Megan Fair (six kills), Hinshaw (19 assists) and Gyori (12 digs) each stood out in the second set for the Skyhawks.

SIUE's momentum from the second set carried over into the third stanza as the Cougars never trailed. Addison Conley accounted for UT Martin's first two kills of the match but SIUE stretched its lead out to 15-8. A kill by Karen Scanlon closed the Skyhawk gap to 17-14 but the Cougars ended the set with eight of the final nine points. Gyori scooped up eight of UT Martin's 20 digs in the third stanza.

The Skyhawks took a 6-4 lead to start off the fourth set but SIUE soon reeled off six unanswered points. UT Martin found itself down by double-digits (22-12) before Rys tried her best to get the Skyhawks back in the match – tallying three straight kills and four overall rally stoppers during a 6-0 surge. However, the Cougars halted the momentum and closed out the set with three straight points. Rys had five kills (against just one error) in nine swings in the set.

UT Martin will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon when it travels to Eastern Illinois. First serve in Charleston, Ill. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
