The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will return to Hardy M. Graham Stadium to open Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 22 when playing host to league rival Austin Peay. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
Saturday's game marks the first of three games in the coveted Sergeant York Trophy series which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four Ohio Valley Conference football-playing schools located in the state of Tennessee – Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin. UT Martin has won and retained the Sgt. York Trophy in three of the past four seasons while holding a 23-10 all-time record in the series – the best mark among the four schools.
The Skyhawks (0-3) enter the contest looking to snap an early losing streak and pick up their first win of the young season. While the schedule has been daunting with the Skyhawks three previous teams combining to post an 8-1 mark through the first three weeks, UT Martin enters conference play hoping to reverse its fortunes. After entering the season projected to finish third in the league standings, the Skyhawks are focused on their eight-game conference slate.
UT Martin is led by sophomore quarterback Dresser Winn who has completed 76-of-120 pass attempts for 824 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior running back LaDarius Galloway has notched 30 carries for 141 yards while junior wide receiver Terry Williams paces the squad with 25 catches for 243 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Defensively, the team looks to the senior linebacker duo of Kevin Prather, Jr. and James Gilleylen to lead the way with 51 combined tackles and 9.0 tackles for loss on the season.
The Skyhawks are led by head coach Jason Simpson who is currently in his 13th season at the helm with an overall record of 78-62. Simpson currently ranks seventh in OVC history in career victories while serving as the league's longest active tenured head coach. Austin Peay is under the direction of third-year head coach Will Healy who has posted a 10-16 mark for the Govs.
Austin Peay (2-1) enters the matchup looking to build upon a pair of convincing victories of Presbyterian (24-0) and Morehead State (78-40) after dropping the season-opener to Georgia. In their most recent contest, the Govs set an OVC record for the most points score against a Division I program with 78 points at Morehead State. The Govs are led offensively by a pair of quarterbacks in JaVaughn Craig (23-of-37, 282 yards and 2 TDs) and Jeremiah Oatsvall (17-of-28, 210 yards and 2 TDs) while the team has notched 10 rushing touchdowns. Defensively, Gunnar Scholato paces the squad with 23 tackles while Jaison Williams has 4.5 tackles for loss.
This game marks the 67th matchup between the two in-state rivals with UT Martin holding a 38-26-2 series advantage. UT Martin enters the contest winning 10 of the last 11 meetings against Austin Peay, despite falling on the road last season by a score of 7-0. The Skyhawks last loss against the Governors at Hardy Graham Stadium came on Nov. 19, 1994.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color), John Hatler (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis.
