MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer squad edged out Evansville tonight as the Skyhawks claimed a 1-0 victory.
UT Martin (3-1) has notched it best four-match start to a season since the program opened the 2014 season 4-0. The Skyhawks outshot the Purple Aces 17-5 as the UT Martin back line and goalkeeping game was outstanding. A defensive struggle and physical match, both teams picked up a pair of yellow cards in the bout.
The Skyhawks were led offensively by freshman Skylor Keane who put up the lone goal of the match. She made the most of her chances as she put up two shots, both on goal. Danae Kaldaridou paced the club in swings as she tallied four followed by Katelyn Colvin, Amy McGivern and Alice Adams – all with three each.
Erica Myers stood tall as she drew the starting nod between the posts and played the match in its entirety. She racked up three saves in her first clean sheet of the year. Myers had a great deal of help with the Skyhawk defenders relieving much of the pressure applied by Evansville. The trio of Kaci Mitchell, Kamryn Chappell and Jacalyn Schubring all logged 90 minutes on the back line.
"We are absolutely delighted with tonight's result," head coach Phil McNamara said. "I thought that the girls were fantastic, especially in the first half. We were able to move the ball really well and were patient. The girls worked well behind the ball which made it difficult on our opponent. I feel that we should have been up maybe one or two more goal – which I feel is fair to our team because they were very tough and just caught a couple of bad breaks. The first half is probably the best 45 minutes we have played all year, which is very encouraging for the rest of the season. Erica had missed the last couple of matches but we were glad to have her back tonight. She made a phenomenal save just before halftime which let us catch our breath for the second half."
UT Martin looks to keep the ball rolling as it heads to system rival Tennessee on Sunday, Sept. 2 with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. CST.
