The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will return to the court for its second game of the homestand with a matchup against regional rival Southern Illinois on Friday, Nov. 9. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Skyhawks (1-0) are coming off a dominating victory over Samford in the season opener on Tuesday evening, picking up an 89-68 win. The squad would play 14 different players in the contest while shooting 49.2 percent from the field. UT Martin would win or tie ever quarter of the contest while the team's fast pace offense was set up by 18 turnovers – resulting directly in 21 points – while controlling the action with 36 points in the paint. With the strong effort, the Skyhawks would hold a lead as large as 27 points late in the fourth quarter while trailing for a total of seven seconds in the contest.
Sophomore Zaire Hicks paced the squad with career-highs in both points (16) and assists (five) while tallying three steals. Preseason All-OVC selection Chelsey Perry also posted a strong outing with 11 points – including seven in the first quarter. Senior Emanye Robertson rounded out the trio in double figures with 10 points. As a team, eight different players scored at least eight points to present a balanced scoresheet.
Southern Illinois (0-0) is opening the season under sixth-year head coach Cindy Stein and returns 10 players from a squad which advanced to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinals a year ago. The Salukis return four starters including Preseason All-MVC selection Nicole Martin (12.0 ppg) and 2018 MVC Freshman of the Year Abby Brockmeyer (10.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg).
Friday's matchup marks the 20th meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1973. UT Martin holds a narrow 10-9 series advantage while winning five of the last seven matchups. Southern Illinois picked up a victory in the last matchup on Nov. 10, 2017 by a final score of 84-72.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (color) provide analysis.
