Tyler Rice has spent three seasons as an assistant coach at UT Martin since joining the staff in 2017. Rice is the team's wide receivers coach while previously serving as the offensive quality control coach.
The passing game went to another level in 2019 as the Skyhawks averaged 222.2 receiving yards per game. UT Martin saw a pair of receivers earn All-OVC honors in Terry Williams and Colton Dowell. While Williams ranked as the nation's top punt return specialist, he tallied 58 receptions for 581 yards and three touchdowns to finish ranked in the top-10 in program history in career receptions. Dowell tallied 38 receptions for 765 yards and four touchdowns. As a team, the Skyhawks ranked second in the OVC in pass efficiency (144.7) and third in pass offense (246.1).Â
During the 2018 season, the Skyhawk receivers tallied 263 receptions totaling 2,917 yards and 21 touchdowns. Highlighting the list was OVC All-Newcomer performer Terry Williams who tallied 67 receptions for 736 yards and three touchdowns on the season. His 67 receptions ranked third in the OVC while ranking 19th nationally.Â
Before UT Martin, Rice served as an assistant coach at Wayne County High School where he was a former prolific quarterback. While coaching the Wildcats, the team posted a 13-2 overall record before falling to eventual state champion Dresden.
Prior to his time at the prep ranks, Rice spent a season as an offensive student assistant at Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State in 2015. While a member of the Racers, Rice assisted an offense which averaged 466.1 yards of total offense behind explosive All-American quarterback KD Humphries who threw for 3,778 yards and 22 touchdowns. Humphries led the nation in completions per game (30.0), passing yards (3,778) and passing yards per game (343.5).
Rice played two seasons at UT Martin, serving as the primary backup for record-setting quarterback Derek Carr for two seasons. Rice played in four games for the Skyhawks before transferring to Morehead State. He played in four games for the Eagles, completing 17 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.
Rice graduated from Murray State in 2016 with a degree in health and physical non-certification.
