Clint McMillan has spent three seasons as an assistant coach at UT Martin since joining the staff in 2017. McMillan serves as the program's defensive line coach along with co-special teams coordinator for punt coverage and punt returns.
During his tenure at UT Martin, McMillan has overseen the progression and development of three All-OVC linemen in Julian Crutchfield, Jay Murphy and Austin Pickett along with return specialist Terry Williams.Â
The Skyhawk front three ranked amongst the best in the OVC in 2019. On the national level, the Skyhawks ranked in the top-25 in blocked kicks (9th), punt return defense (10th), blocked punts (11th), defensive touchdowns (11th), fewest penalties per game (15th), fewest penalties (19th) and pass defense efficiency (20th) while leading the OVC with 25 sacks. As a whole, the Skyhawk defensive line tallied 199 total tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks while notching 38 quarterback hurries.
Senior nose tackle Austin Pickett picked up All-OVC first team honors. While the Skyhawk defense led the OVC in sacks, Pickett shared a heavy load in that attack, tallying 38 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks on the season. His 4.5 sacks tied for the team lead while accumulating 34 yards of loss. Senior return specialist Terry Williams proved to be one of the most dynamic players in the country, tallying 22 punt returns for 397 yards, averaging 18.0 yards per return while ranking as the only player in the country (FCS or FBS) to return multiple punt returns for touchdowns. His 18.0 yards per punt return average ranked second nationally while also ranking 42nd nationally in kick returns (22.4 yards/return). Junior Korbin Harmon also led the country with three blocked kicks.
During the 2018 season, UT Martin's defense proved to be one the stingiest in the league. The Skyhawks ranked 17th nationally in tackles for loss (7.6 per game), 26th in rushing defense (130.5 ypg) and 30th in first down defense (203). In conference play UT Martin ranked second in rushing defense, pass defense (202.1 ypg), total defense (332.4 ypg) and tackles for loss. Meanwhile, they ranked third in third-down conversion defense (35.5 percent), fourth down conversion defense (43.8 percent) and redzone defense (79.3 percent) while sitting fourth in scoring defense (29.0 ppg) and sacks (1.88 per game).
The Skyhawks boasted one All-OVC performer on the defensive line in Julian Crutchfield. He was named to the All-OVC second team and Phil Steele Postseason OVC All-Conference squad after finishing the season with 41 tackles while creating havoc in the backfield with 9.0 tackles for loss totaling 36 yards – including a pair of sacks. His 9.0 tackles for loss ranked 16th in the OVC while sitting third on the team.Â
During the 2017 season, McMillan coached one of the best statistical defensive units in the country. The Skyhawks finished the season ranked first in red zone defense (60.6 percent), fourth in scoring defense (14.3 ppg), fourth in first downs defense (168), sixth in total defense (273.8 ypg), sixth in third down conversion percentage defense (28.7 percent), eighth in fourth down conversion percentage defense (28.6 percent), eighth in team passing efficiency defense (104.3), ninth in passing yards allowed (159.9 ypg) and 20th in rushing defense (113.9 ypg) nationally.
He also mentored senior Jay Murphy which capped off his stellar four-year Skyhawk career with All-Ohio Valley Conference honors. Murphy tallied 39 tackles on the season, including 14 solos and 25 assists. He has tallied five tackles for loss totaling eight yards – including one sack against No. 15 Chattanooga. His pair of fumble recoveries ranked second in the league while tallying three quarterback hurries and one pass breakup.
Before UT Martin, McMillan served as a defensive graduate assistant at Marshall from 2014-16, working primarily with the defensive line unit. During his three seasons with the Thundering Herd, the squad compiled a 26-13 record and one Conference USA championship along with appearances in the Boca Raton Bowl (2014) and St. Petersburg Bowl (2015).
Defensively, Marshall would tally 95 sacks during the three-year span while leading Conference USA in scoring defense (17.8 ppg), pass defense (192.6 ypg), total defense (360.8 ypg) and pass defense efficiency (100.6) in 2015. Meanwhile during the team’s championship run of 2014, the Thundering Herd led the league in scoring defense (21.0) and pass defense efficiency (113.5) along with numerous offensive categories.
During his tenure he assisted in coaching 2014 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year Neville Hewitt and Evan McKelvey along with all-conference selections James Rouse, Darryl Roberts, Arnold Blackmon, Jermaine Holmes and Jarquez Samuel.
Prior to his stint at Marshall, McMillan briefly served on the coaching staff at Weber State as a graduate assistant from 2012-14. Before coming to Weber State, he also spent a couple seasons as a high school football coach in his home state of Florida.
McMillan played four seasons at the University of Florida, appearing in 48 career games at defensive tackle for the Gators. He started in all 13 games as a senior and recorded 23 tackles. In 2006, he was a member of the Gator squad which won the BCS National Championship under head coach Urban Meyer.
McMillan earned a Bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Florida in 2007.
