Alex Lozado is in his third season and second stint on the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball coaching staff, after returning to Martin, Tenn. from a season as an assistant coach at Morehead State. In 2023, he was a Skyhawk volunteer assistant before being promoted to a full-time assistant in 2024.
Last season at Morehead State, the Eagles saw three student-athletes be recognized with postseason accolades with Hunter Thomas (All-Ohio Valley Conference second team), Caden Sheridan (all-freshman team) and Kamden Hawks (all-freshman team). Thomas ranked 37th nationally in home runs with 19 while Sheridan (14 doubles, most of any OVC freshman) and Hawks (.245 opponent batting average, sixth in the conference) produced solid rookie campaigns.
As a team, Morehead State ranked among the league's best in slugging percentage (.462, first), home runs (76, second), total bases (890, second) and batting average (.278, fourth). When it came to conference play, the Eagles placed inside the top three in doubles (61, first), home runs (40, second), triples (11, second), total bases (478, second) and slugging percentage (.476, third).
In 2024, UT Martin made the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for the second straight season which marked the first time the Skyhawks had appeared in the postseason in consecutive campaigns. Lozado helped produce four All-OVC honorees with three student-athletes making the second team (third basemen Mac Danford, outfielder Will Smith and relief pitcher Tucker Reed) while Tristan Walton (first team all-conference) became the first UT Martin pitcher to lead the OVC in ERA and make the OVC’s All-Tournament team.
Lozado's first season at UT Martin was a memorable one as the Skyhawks rewrote the record book. UT Martin posted 14 Ohio Valley Conference wins (most in school history), tying for the second-most in the league and entering the OVC Championship tournament as the No. 3 seed.
The Skyhawks were responsible for the program's highest Major League Baseball Draft pick in Caleb Hobson (13th round to the Colorado Rockies) and touted the school's first-ever Freshman All-American pitcher and OVC Freshman of the Year in Zach Wager. All in all, a school-record five UT Martin players garnered All-OVC recognition in 2023.Â
Lozado joined the Skyhawks fresh off a collegiate playing career at the University of South Florida under head coach Billy Mohl. A right-handed pitcher, Lozado made five appearances during his debut season with the Bulls in 2021 as he was a member of the USF squad who advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals after claiming an American Athletic Conference tournament championship. Lozado accounted for a 3.18 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP over 5.2 innings of work.
A Georgetown, Ind. native, Lozado began his collegiate career as a two-way player at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Fla. Playing for head coach Mike Kandler, Lozado started 63 of his 66 games played as an infielder, hitting .268 with 28 runs scored, nine doubles, a pair of home runs and 28 RBI's. On the mound, he made 18 appearances (nine starts), going 5-2 with four saves and a 3.77 ERA over 62 innings pitched - boasting a remarkable 56:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He helped the Commodores to a 44-29 overall record during his two-year stint.
Lozado's best season at Gulf Coast State came during the shortened 2020 campaign. At the plate, he led the squad with a .358 batting average while producing an .886 OPS. He also went 4-2 with a 2.61 ERA over eight starts, tallying a 0.99 WHIP with 42 strikeouts against just five walks in a team-best 41.1 innings. He was part of a combined no-hitter in the Jan. 26 season opener against Faulkner, tossing the first four innings in the sixth no-hitter in Commodore history. As a freshman in 2019, Lozado started 40 games as a position player while going 1-0 with a team-high four saves (ninth all-time for a single season in school history) in 10 appearances.
Prepping at Floyd Central High School in Floyds Knobs, Ind., Lozado piled up all-area and all-conference first team honors while nabbing Pitcher of the Year accolades over his career, which included a 1.80 ERA as a senior and a 1.30 ERA during his junior campaign.
Lozado comes from an extensive baseball background as his father Willie Lozado played professionally for 10 seasons - including a 43-game stint for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1984.
Lozado graduated from South Florida in 2022 with a degree in communications.
