BRENTWOOD, Tenn.- After setting the Ohio Valley Conference single-game record for stolen bases on top of a stellar week, TJ Grines of the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team was named league player of the week for the first time in his career.
Â
The Alexandria, La. native has been sensational this season for the Skyhawks, and he continued his dominant year with an exceptional series against Western Illinois. He went 9-15 during the series win in Macomb, Ill. with a season-high four RBIs in Game 2 and a season-best four hits in the series finale. He recorded home runs in back-to-back games while stealing an OVC record and program record six stolen bases in the rubber match win.
Â
The senior produced a slash line of .474/.524/.842 in four games with seven RBIs, eight runs scored, one double, two home runs and seven stolen bases. He leads the country with 56 swiped bags while ranking in the top 10 in runs scored (third, 67) and hits (seventh, 76).
Â
Overall, he's top 10 in the conference in runs scored (first), hits (first), stolen bases (first), doubles (second, 16), batting average (fourth, .369), triples (fourth, three) and RBIs (eighth, 47).
Â
Against league opponents, he's top three in the OVC in runs scored (first, 35), hits (first, 38), stolen bases (first, 26), home runs (third, seven) batting average (third, .413), slugging percentage (third, .717), on base percentage (third, .477) and OPS (third, 1.194). His 22 RBIs in conference play are eighth most in the OVC.
Â
He becomes the 21st student-athlete in program history to be named league player of the week and the third this season with Andrew Lawrence and Garner Anderson earning accolades previously. This marks the first time in program history that UT Martin has won five OVC player/pitcher of the week awards in one season, and the first time since the 2023 campaign (four) that three or more Skyhawks have been tabbed conference player of the week.
Â
UT Martin ends a season-long five-game road trip on Tuesday, May 5 when it travels to Murray State for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
