Skyhawks Fall In Series Opener To SIUE; Clinch Spot In OVC Baseball Championships

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team outhit first-place SIUE 11-10 but fell 8-2 in the series opener at Simmons Baseball Complex. Despite the loss, the Skyhawks clinched a spot in the upcoming OVC Baseball Championships for a fourth consecutive season.

TJ Grines (three hits, home run, stolen base) recorded his ninth straight multi-hit game while Garner Anderson (stolen base, double) also had three base knocks. Andrew Lawrence (two hits) drove in a run and drew a walk.

Jacob Sitton (5-6, seven innings) struck out six batters in his 14^th start of the season while Cason Sharp threw an inning out of the bullpen.

The Skyhawks (25-28, 10-15 Ohio Valley Conference) got on the board right off the bat as Grines hit the second pitch he saw out of the ballpark for his 10^th home run of the year. Sitton retired the first six batters he faced, and UT Martin led by one as the game entered the third. The Cougars (31-21, 19-6 OVC) got on the offensive in the home half and claimed the lead.

Lawrence singled to left field to plate Anderson and made it a three-run game in the fifth. Sitton ended his day with four straight scoreless innings to keep his team right in the thick of things as the contest entered the late stages.

SIUE was able to pull away with insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and closed out the ninth to win Game 1 of the weekend series.

Tomorrow's game is set for 5 p.m.
