MACOMB, Ill.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell 9-3 in the first game of the Ohio Valley Conference weekend series to Western Illinois at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
Â
The Skyhawks (21-24, 7-12 OVC) were led in hits by TJ Grines (two hits, RBI, stolen base) while Colten Payton (RBI, stolen base), TJ Dunsford, Andrew Davis (run scored), JT Popick, Cameron Greene (double, RBI) and Garner Anderson also recorded base knocks.
Â

Â
Grines started the game with a lead-off single and later scored when Payton took a single to the opposite field for a 1-0 lead. The Leathernecks (16-28, 8-11 OVC) took the advantage over the next two innings, but Sitton held them scoreless in the third with two flyouts and a strikeout.
Â
The righty Sitton tossed his second straight scoreless frame by fanning the lead-off man and inducing a flyout and groundout to conclude the fourth. Western Illinois added on to its lead over the course of the next two innings, however UT Martin cut its deficit down to three in the next frame off a Greene RBI double and Grines RBI single.
Â
The Leathernecks had a counterattack ready and answered the runs scored by the Skyhawks in the home half of the seventh. In the bottom half of the eighth, Little threw a zero up on the board but UT Martin was unable to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth.
Â
The Skyhawks will now get set for Game 2 tomorrow at 1 p.m.
