Despite leading at halftime, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team (13-15, 9-10 OVC) was outscored by 14 in the second half and fell to Tennessee Tech, 80-68, Thursday night at the Kathleen & Tom Elam Center in Martin. UT Martin led by two at halftime and pushed the lead to four early in the third quarter. However, once Tennessee Tech took the lead with 7:31 to play in the third, they never relinquished it. The final deficit of 12 points was the largest lead of the game for Tennessee Tech. Kenley McCarn led the Skyhawks in the game with 21 points and six rebounds, marking her sixth 20-plus point performance this season. Grace Billington and Brittani Wells each had nine points in the contest, while Norah Clark, Sidni Middleton and Cam Ward each had eight points.
Kenley McCarn currently leads the Skyhawks with 15.9 points per game, while Zy Thompson and Sidni Middleton follow at 10.9 and 9.1, respectively. On the boards, Thompson leads UT Martin with 6.0 rebounds per game, while Brittani Wells leads in assists and steals, at 3.7 and 1.9, respectively. As a team, the Skyhawks average 63.2 points and 33.5 rebounds per game, while their opponents average 62.9 and 38.8. They are currently shooting 40.7-percent from the field, 29.5-percent from 3-point range and 73.0-percent at the free-throw line.
Already eliminated from post-season contention, Tennessee State enter Saturday on a five-game losing streak with a record of 4-24 overall and 3-16 in OVC play. Saturday will be the 75th meeting between UT Martin and Tennessee State with the Skyhawks leading the all-time series, 42-32. The Skyhawks have one each of the last two meetings and lead the series in Martin, 26-9.
With a Little Rock win and an SIUE loss Thursday, the Skyhawks are now locked into either the sixth or seventh seed in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Championship and will face either SIUE, Southeast Missouri or Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, Mar. 4 at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks have made a 3-point field goal in 541 consecutive games, a streak dating back to Feb. 3, 2009 against Austin Peay and ranking seventh, nationally.
Kenley McCarn has scored 10 or more points in 26 of the Skyhawks' 28 games this season. She is averaging 15.9 points on the season and has scored 20 or more points in six games this season.
The Skyhawks are currently 9-4 overall and 6-3 in OVC play at the Kathleen & Tom Elam Center this season. UT Martin won seven straight home games between losses to then No. 8 Tennessee and Little Rock.
UT Martin has posted a 159-59 (.729) record at home during the Kevin McMillan Era, dating back to 2009. Since taking over as head coach, the Skyhawks have notched a .735 winning percentage. The home squad has also posted a 116-33 record in the Elam Center (.779) against OVC foes during the same span.
Skyhawk guard Kenley McCarn has started her career on the right foot by scoring double figures in 81 of her 94 career games. Last season, she became just the 19th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and currently averages 15.4 points per game for her career. With 13 points at Morehead State, she officially became one of the Top 10 scorers in UT Martin history. She currently ranks 7th in program history with 1,487 career points, last passing the great Pat Head Summitt. She is currently on pace this season to become just the seventh Skyhawk in program history to reach the 1,500-point plateau.
