Down 14 in the third quarter, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team (13-14, 9-9 OVC) clawed its way back to within one in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback as it fell at Little Rock, 65-57, at the Jack Stephens Center. Little Rock led by as many as 14 in the third quarter and took a 47-37 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game. The Skyhawks opened the fourth on a 9-3 run and trailed by just one at 56-55 with exactly 3:00 remaining in the contest. Despite the rally, that would be as close as the Skyhawks would get, as Little Rock ended the game on a 9-2 run to seal the win.
Kenley McCarn currently leads the Skyhawks with 15.7 points per game, while Zy Thompson and Sidni Middleton follow at 10.9 and 9.2, respectively. On the boards, Thompson leads UT Martin with 6.0 rebounds per game, while Brittani Wells leads in assists and steals, at 3.7 and 1.9, respectively. As a team, the Skyhawks average 63.0 points and 33.5 rebounds per game, while their opponents average 62.2 and 38.7. They are currently shooting 40.5-percent from the field, 29.6-percent from 3-point range and 73.2-percent at the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles enter Thursday on a three-game skid and are currently 14-13 on the season and 7-11 in conference play. The Golden Eagles currently average 65.9 points per game, while allowing 64.3. Cam Ward and Brittani Wells both set new career highs Thursday at Little Rock. Ward notched her first double-double with career marks of 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Brittani Wells flirted with her own double-double, scoring 10 points and recording a career-best and Skyhawk season-high nine assists.
The Skyhawks currently have the 70th-best field goal percentage defense in the nation at 37.8-percent, while they rank 98th in the nation in free throws made per game at 13.22 and 129th in steals per game at 9.0. Individually, Brittani Wells is 27th in the nation in minutes per game at 35.35, while Kenley McCarn is 30th at 35.25. McCarn is also 122nd in points per game (15.7), which also ranks fourth in the OVC.
Kenley McCarn has scored 10 or more points in 25 of the Skyhawks' 27 games this season. She is averaging 15.7 points on the season and has scored 10 or more points in 33 of her last 37 games.
The Skyhawks are currently 9-3 overall and 6-2 in OVC play at the Kathleen & Tom Elam Center this season. UT Martin won seven straight home games between losses to then No. 8 Tennessee and Little Rock.
UT Martin has posted a 159-58 (.733) record at home during the Kevin McMillan Era, dating back to 2009. Since taking over as head coach, the Skyhawks have notched a .735 winning percentage. The home squad has also posted a 116-32 record in the Elam Center (.784) against OVC foes during the same span.
Skyhawk guard Kenley McCarn has started her career on the right foot by scoring double figures in 81 of her 94 career games. Last season, she became just the 19th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and currently averages 15.4 points per game for her career. With 13 points at Morehead State, she officially became one of the Top 10 scorers in UT Martin history. She currently ranks 7th in program history with 1,457 career points, last passing the great Pat Head Summitt. She is currently on pace this season to become just the seventh Skyhawk in program history to reach the 1,500-point plateau.
