LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Down 14 in the third quarter, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team clawed its way back to within one in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback as it fell at Little Rock, 65-57, at the Jack Stephen Center.
It was a tale of two halves for the Skyhawks, as they were outscored, 29-18, in the first 20 minutes on 28.6-percent shooting and went just 1-for-5 at the free throw line in the first half. However, in the second half, UT Martin outscored the Trojans, 39-36, on 35.7-percent shooting to go along with a near-perfect 17-for-18 performance at the free throw line.
Little Rock led by as many as 14 in the third quarter and took a 47-37 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game. The Skyhawks opened the fourth on a 9-3 run and trailed by just one at 56-55 with exactly 3:00 remaining in the contest. Despite the rally, that would be as close as the Skyhawks would get, as Little Rock ended the game on a 9-2 run to seal the win.
Cam Ward had career-highs of 15 points and 14 rebounds Thursday for her first double-double of the season, while Brittani Wells was oh-so close to her double-double with 10 points and a career-best nine assists. Kenley McCarn chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds, while Sidni Middleton added eight points.
Having already played two games this week, the Skyhawks will have Saturday off to prepare for the final week of the regular season. On Thursday, UT Martin hosts Tennessee Tech at the Elam Center, followed by a visit from Tennessee State Saturday.
