BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For just the second time in University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball history, three separate Skyhawks have been named an Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week in the same season as Pedro Santos earned that recognition today.
Santos is only the 15th player in school history to receive an OVC Freshman of the Week award, joining teammates Matas Deniusas (10 times) and Damien King (once) as fellow UT Martin winners in 2025-26. That group joins the 2010-11 Skyhawks as the only squad in program history to produce three different OVC Freshmen of the Week (Mike Liabo, Troy King, Terence Smith) in the same season.
A 6-7, 200-pound guard, Santos helped UT Martin keep its lead atop the OVC standings this week with a grueling road split. He averaged 12.0 points, 4.0 steals, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per outing with shooting splits of .500/.400/1.000.
During Saturday's win at SIUE, Santos collected 15 points, three steals, three rebounds in 27 minutes. The Porto, Portugal native also pieced together nine points, a career-best five steals, three rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes in the Skyhawks' narrow one-point setback on Thursday at Lindenwood.
Santos ranks fifth in the OVC in steals (1.88 per contest) in league play while his 1.64 steals per outing overall ranks eighth in the conference. He has reached double figures in the scoring column eight times in the last 17 games and owns 13 multi-steal performances in 2025-26.
UT Martin has a busy week ahead with a pair of midweek matchups, beginning with a home tilt tomorrow against Southeast Missouri. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
