EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball opened the fourth quarter of Saturday's game at SIUE on a 10-0 run, but it was not enough as the Skyhawks fell to the Cougars, 62-52, at First Community Arena in Edwardsville.
It was a slow first half for UT Martin as they scored just 14 points, including only five in the second quarter, and trailed 34-14 at the half. In the third quarter, the Skyhawks seemed to find their groove and scored 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, but at the end of the period, they still trailed by 16.
In the fourth, UT Martin got off to a hot start, opening the quarter on a 10-0 run, cutting the SIUE lead to just six. However, from that point on, they were outscored 9-3 and held to zero field goals for nearly the final four minutes of the contest.
Despite outshooting the Cougars, 40.8-percent to 39.0 percent, SIUE dominated the glass, winning the rebound battle, 37 to 28, including 12 offensive boards. The Cougars also took advantage of UT Martin turnovers and second chances, outscoring the Skyhawks, 28-15, over the two categories combined.
Kenley McCarn led UT Martin in the game with 15 points and three steals, while Sidni Middleton had 13 points and Grace Billington added 11. Zy Thompson finished the game with team-highs of 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
Despite the loss, other results from around the league Saturday clinched UT Martin's spot in next month's Ohio Valley Conference Women's Basketball Championship. The Skyhawks have now qualified for the annual tournament in each of head coach Kevin McMillan's 17 years at the helm.
The next week for the Skyhawks will be off their normal schedule, playing Tuesday and Thursday, instead of the normal Thursday and Saturday. On Tuesday, the Skyhawks will host Southeast Missouri, then travel to Little Rock Thursday.
