The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team defeated Eastern Illinois, 58-51, Saturday afternoon at the Kathleen & Tom Elam Center in Martin. The game was a low-scoring affair, with neither team reaching the 60-point mark. Eastern Illinois shot just 30.5 percent from the field, while the Skyhawks shot 29.1 percent. UT Martin was outscored in the second half, 31-26, but it was a big second quarter that saw them hold a 21-9 advantage over the Panthers that helped seal the win. Kenley McCarn led all scorers in the game with 21 points, marking the second consecutive game and the third time in the last four games that she has reached or eclipsed the 20-point mark. Zy Thompson scored 14 points, pulled down eight rebounds and had a career-best four blocks, while Brittani Wells scored 10 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Sidni Middleton scored just three points in the game but led the Skyhawks on the glass by tying her career-high of nine rebounds.
Kenley McCarn currently leads the Skyhawks with 15.8 points per game, while Zy Thompson and Sidni Middleton follow at 11.9 and 10.8, respectively. On the boards, Thompson leads UT Martin with 6.8 rebounds per game, while Brittani Wells leads in assists and steals at 4.2 and 2.3. As a team, the Skyhawks are averaging 68.9 points and 37.1 rebounds per game, while their opponents average 63.6 and 42.0. Zy Thompson and Sidni Middleton of the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team were named as the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Thompson nearly averaged a double-double on the week with 12 points and 11 rebounds against Western Illinois and 14 points and eight rebounds against Eastern Illinois. She shot 50.0-percent (8-16) from the floor on the week and went 10-for-12 at the free throw line, including going 4-for-4 against Western Illinois. Against Eastern Illinois, she recorded a career-high four blocks. Middleton averaged 14.0 points and nine rebounds per game last week, including a career-high tying 25 points against Western Illinois and a career-best nine rebounds in each game. Against Western Illinois, she was perfect at the free throw line, going 9-for-9. Thompson currently averages 11.9 points per game on the season and team-highs of 6.8 rebounds and 1.0 blocks, while Middleton averages 10.8 points per game, 4.5 rebounds and shoots 93.5-percent from the free throw line, the fifth-best percentage in the nation.
The Skyhawks currently have the 32nd-best field goal percentage defense in the nation at 36.0, while they rank 45th in the nation in steals per game at 11.0.
