MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team has announced it will host the Tennessee Lady Vols in the Pat Summitt Heritage Classic Nov. 9 at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center in Martin, Tennessee.
The game seeks to honor the legendary Pat Summitt by bringing together the school where she played and the school she coached at, at the place that helped launch her amazing career in basketball.
Tickets for this standalone event are now on sale and are not included in any season ticket package. Seating for the game ranges from $25 to $60, with premium packages also available starting at $200. Children under the age of five are admitted free, but must sit in an adult's lap. Any person sitting in a seat, regardless of age, must purchase a ticket.
The game will mark the Lady Vols' fourth trip to Martin and first since 1997. The two teams have met on 18 previous occasions, including last season in Knoxville, with Tennessee holding a 15-3 all-time series lead. Should Tennessee enter the contest ranked, it will mark the second consecutive season that UT Martin has hosted a ranked team, after then 18th-ranked Louisville made the trip to the Elam Center last season. The game will also be a reunion for Skyhawk newcomer Destinee Wells, after having played the previous two seasons at Tennessee.
Summitt was a trailblazing figure in women's basketball, both as a player and coach. She played for the Skyhawks, becoming an All-American, before transitioning into a legendary coaching career at Tennessee. As head coach of the Lady Vols, she became the winningest coach in NCAA Division I basketball history at the time, amassing over 1,000 wins and leading her team to eight SEC titles and two national championships. Summitt also represented the U.S. in the Olympics, winning silver as a player at the 1976 Montreal Games and gold as a coach at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, cementing her legacy as one of the sport's greatest figures.
