MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program has secured a commitment from Filip Petkovski, a 6-4, 185-pound freshman point guard out of Kranj, Slovenia.
Petkovski becomes the seventh signee for Skyhawk second-year head coach Jeremy Shulman this offseason, joining fellow freshmen Ama Sow (Dakar, Senegal), James Bass (Banjul, Gambia), Ty Price (Morgantown, Ky.), Damien King (Anderson, Ind.) as well as redshirt sophomore Dragos Lungu (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) and senior Luca Colceag (Bucharest, Romania).
"We are so excited to welcome Filip to the UT Martin family," Shulman said. "Filip is an incredibly high IQ point guard who is an extension of the coach on the court. He sees the game multiple sequences ahead of time and he is a perfect fit for us."
Petkovski brings a plethora of international experience to the UT Martin program as he is a member of the Slovenian National Team. At the FIBA U18 EuroBasket event held in Tampere, Finland last summer, he combined for 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting (87.5 percent), six assists, four rebounds and five steals in a pair of group phase victories. He also connected on 83.3 percent (5-for-6) of his free throw attempts in the prestigious event, which included an 11-point effort (on 5-of-5 shooting) in just 15 minutes against Spain and an 8-point, 4-assist, 4-steal outing in only 16 minutes against Lithuania.
Petkovski additionally represented his home country at the 2022 FIBA U16 European Championship tournament, which was held in Skopje, North Macedonia. He took part in seven games in that event, averaging 6.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists per contest. His tournament-high of 11 points came against Italy while he hauled in at least six rebounds in five of the seven games, including nine boards against Spain. He also handed out five or more assists on four separate occasions to go along with four multi-steal performances.
Currently, Petkovski plays for the ECE Triglav Kranj organization in the Liga OTP Banka. He has logged 26 games during the 2024-25 campaign, compiling 84 points, 35 rebounds, 42 assists and 15 steals over 371 minutes of playing time. His best outing so far this season came on June 13 as he poured in 20 points (including a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range) with five rebounds and three steals in 22 minutes against the Switzerland U19 squad. He also recorded 19 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals in 27 minutes against KK Hidria on Feb. 5. Overall, he has logged 45 games for that organization over the past two seasons.
