MARTIN, Tenn. – A second spring commitment for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program has rolled in as head coach Jeremy Shulman has added Dragos Lungu from the University of San Diego.
Lungu is a 6-6, 190-pound redshirt sophomore guard from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Prior to his two-year stint at San Diego, he attended the NBA Global Academy in Canberra, Australia.
"Dragos is a welcome jolt to our backcourt," Shulman said. "He kind of flew under-the-radar in the transfer portal because of an injury last season but he's experienced success at both the Division I and international levels. He is an exciting addition to our program with his playmaking abilities, length and strong basketball IQ at the guard position."
Playing under head coach Steve Lavin, Lungu saw playing time in 37 games while logging 15 starts for the Toreros, who compete in the West Coast Conference. Lungu posted 145 points, 82 rebounds, 65 assists and 16 steals while averaging 17.9 minutes per game for his San Diego career.
In 2024-25, Lungu started the first four games before suffering a season-ending injury in late November. His best outing came on Nov. 12 against Portland State as he piled up 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting in just 22 minutes of playing time. Of his seven games played, he hauled in a season-best four rebounds three times (against Boston University on Nov. 8, against Idaho State on Nov. 16 and against Idaho on Nov. 24) and posted three multi-assist outings (including a season-best three assists with no turnovers in the aforementioned contest against Boston University).
Lungu was an immediate contributor in his debut collegiate season, earning WCC Freshman of the Week accolades on Jan. 2, 2024. He helped the Toreros post an 18-15 overall record – the most victories for the program since the 2018-19 campaign. He pumped in double-digit scoring performances in five of his first 13 career games, including a career-best 20 points (on 6-of-9 shooting) to go along with six rebounds against Jackson State on Nov. 8. He also cracked double figures in the scoring column against Sonoma State (11 points on Nov. 6), Arkansas State (Nov. 24), at Stanford (Dec. 3) and Westcliff (Dec. 31).
Lungu also grabbed at least six rebounds in five of his first 13 outings, including a career-high eight boards in the aforementioned Nov. 24 game against Arkansas State. He distributed at least four assists on six separate occasions with his career-high of six dimes coming against Northern Colorado (Nov. 29) and eventual NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 participant Gonzaga on Jan. 6. Defensively, he had four multi-steal performances (including a career-best three swipes in the WCC Tournament quarterfinals against Santa Clara on March 9) and had a pair of blocked shots in the previously mentioned Westcliff game on Dec. 31.
On the international scene, Lungu was the Most Valuable Player of the FIBA U20 EuroBasket Division B event held in Pitesti, Romania in the summer of 2024. He averaged 16.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals in 25.5 minutes over seven games, helping his home country to the championship. He went off for 23 points (on 11-of-14 shooting) in the July 19 quarterfinals against Hungary and added a 20-point effort against Estonia in the July 12 group phase. He also secured double-doubles in the July 13 group phase against Georgia (19 points, 13 rebounds), in the July 14 group phase against Albania (19 points, 10 rebounds) and in the July 21 championship matchup against Ukraine (10 points, 10 rebounds plus a tournament-high four assists and two steals). He additionally swiped five steals in the semifinals against Finland on July 20.
Lungu also represented Romania in the 2022 FIBA U18 European Championship Division B tournament, averaging 12.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists over eight games. That came after he averaged 17.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in a four-game stretch during the 2021 FIBA U18 European Challengers event.
Lungu is the fifth Skyhawk to join the program in 2025-26, joining Ama Sow (Montour HS/Dakar, Senegal), James Bass (Campbell HS/Dakar, Senegal), Ty Price (Butler County HS/Morgantown, Ky.) and Damien King (Anderson HS/Anderson, Ind.).
