OLD HICKORY, Tenn. – Redshirt senior Jackson Twerdahl was responsible for the best round of his collegiate career today, rising to the top of the leaderboard for his first career medalist finish for the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate.
A Nolensville, Tenn. native, Twerdahl rolled in a whopping seven birdies in Round 3 for a 65 – three strokes better than his previously low round at the collegiate level. As a result, Twerdahl jumped ahead of Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Jose Berenguel for first-place honors, winning the 92-man tournament with a final score of 204 (-9).
"You couldn't write a better ending to a career for Jackson," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "He's been through a lot of adversity in his career and there were moments he could've thrown in the towel. But he stayed and worked his tail off. For him to win his first college tournament at the last stroke play event of the regular season is quite special."
UT Martin shot an even-par 284 today, bringing its 54-hole total to 851 (-1). That score ranked second in the 14-team standings, three shots behind tournament winner Arkansas-Pine Bluff (848, -4). This marks the fifth top-five finish in 10 team events for the Skyhawks in 2024-25.
"I'm proud of our guys this week and their efforts in cool, wet conditions," Swafford said. It was good to be in contention this week – we came up a tad short but we battled and can use this experience going forward."
Four UT Martin recipients placed in the top-10 while a half-dozen total Skyhawks wrapped up the tournament in the top-20. Luke Caldwell (213, E) placed fourth in the field and was followed by a tie for sixth place with matching scores of 214 (+1) by Jonathan Xoinis and John-Gregory Wilson. Finishing 11th was Grant Phillips (215, +2) while Ethan Ray's 217 (+4) was good enough for a 19th-place effort.
In addition to Twerdahl's 65, UT Martin received countable tallies out of Xoinis (72 with two birdies), Caldwell (73 with one birdie) and Garrett Chumley (74 with one birdie). Drew Williams (75, two birdies) was the fifth member of the Skyhawk scoring lineup.
Wilson's career-best 68 included four birdies as the freshman paced five UT Martin representatives who were tagged as individuals in the field. Ray (72 with two birdies), Luke Beadles (73 with two birdies), Jaden Morrell (73 with one birdie) and Phillips (74 with two birdies) rounded out the scoring for the Skyhawk individuals.
For the tournament, Chumley and Williams each shot a 223 (+10) while Beadles (228, +15) and Morrell (229, +16) completed the scoring for UT Martin.
The Skyhawks close out the regular season with the fourth annual Carpenter/Chaney Classic next Monday, April 14. This year's match play event – co-hosted by UT Martin and Morehead State – will take place in Paducah, Ky. for the second straight year.
