MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program goes for its fourth home win in as many tries in the all-time series against Ohio Valley Conference rival Lindenwood tomorrow. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's basketball contest as part of a doubleheader.
The Skyhawks (9-14, 5-7 OVC) will seek a season split against the Lions after Lindenwood squeaked out an 82-81 win during the Jan. 11 contest in St. Charles, Mo. In that game, UT Martin led for 29:42 of clock time but the Lions made a go-ahead three-pointer with 5.5 seconds remaining for the win.
Tarence Guinyard (18 points), Vladimer Salaridze (14 points, 13 rebounds), Afan Trnka (14 points), Josué Grullon (14 points) and Matija Žužić (10 points) all turned in quality offensive performances at Lindenwood as the Skyhawks hit 14 treys in 31 attempts (45.2 percent).
UT Martin will look to get back on track after a pair of road losses to 8-4 teams in the OVC standings last week. Despite the setbacks, Grullon showed out to the tune of 22.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per outing - earning himself an OVC Newcomer of the Week award for the second time in 2024-25.
The Skyhawks and Lions have both showed a knack for steals this season. While Lindenwood tops the OVC with an average of 8.87 swipes per game, UT Martin leads the league in the same category (8.92 per contest) in conference play.
Playing their first road game since Jan. 18 are the Lions, who split a pair of close decisions last week (won 65-63 over SIUE on Thursday, fell 76-70 to Eastern Illinois on Saturday). Markeith Browning II tossed in a career-best 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting on Saturday but Lindenwood shot 23.5 percent (4-for-17) from three-point land.
In the Jan. 11 matchup against the Skyhawks, Anias Futrell posted 26 points and 10 rebounds before Nathan Johnson, Jr. hit the eventual game-winner for the Lions (10-13, 5-7 OVC).
