MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team opens the team portion of its spring schedule this weekend as the Skyhawks will take part in the Loyola Intercollegiate, held in Goodyear, Ariz. on Feb. 16-18.
This marks UT Martin's seventh appearance in the Loyola Intercollegiate in the last 10 years but first since the 2022 spring semester. The Skyhawks are one of 19 teams competing in this year's event, joining a field that includes Boise State, Bucknell, Fairfield, George Washington, Gonzaga, Howard, Loyola (Md.), Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Missouri State, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Omaha, Richmond, Siena, SIUE, South Dakota and Toledo. The tournament format is an 18-hole round per day on Sunday through Tuesday at the Palm Valley Golf Club, a par-72, 7,015-yard challenge.
The weather forecast for the event calls for highs of 74-77 degrees each day with mostly sunny/partly cloudy skies and winds varying from 6-8 miles per hour.
UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford has identified a scoring lineup of Jackson Twerdahl at No. 1, Luke Caldwell at No. 2, Ethan Ray at No. 3, Drew Williams at No. 4 and Jonathan Xoinis at No. 5. John-Gregory Wilson will also compete as an individual.
The first four participants in the Skyhawk lineup competed in the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate earlier this month in Statesboro, Ga. In the field where all golfers compete as individuals with no team format, the trio of Caldwell (+2, 14th), Twerdahl (+3, 18th) and Ray (+5, 24th) each earned top-25 finishes.
The Loyola Intercollegiate is the first of six team tournaments to close out UT Martin's regular season. Following this event, the Skyhawks travel to the Gulf Coast Collegiate (Feb. 24-25 in New Orleans, La.) before heading to the People's Golf Championship on March 13-15 in St. Simons Island, Ga. A pair of in-state tournaments are next on the docket as UT Martin makes short trips to the Memphis Intercollegiate (March 31-April 1 in Cordova) and the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate (April 7-8 in Old Hickory). The fourth annual Carpenter/Chaney Classic, a match-play event co-hosted by the Skyhawks and Morehead State, is set for April 14 in Paducah, Ky.
This year's Ohio Valley Conference Championships shifts back to Cape Girardeau, Mo. and is set for April 20-23. The event will once again consist of 54 holes of stroke play before the top four teams in the standings advance to match play on the final day.
