MARTIN, Tenn. – One of the most closely contested rivalries in the Ohio Valley Conference from a year ago resumes when the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad visits Tennessee Tech to close out the 2025 calendar year. Tipoff from Cookeville, Tenn. is set for 3 p.m. tomorrow on ESPN+.
Last season, both regular season matchups between these two squads went into overtime as the Golden Eagles claimed both decisions (89-85 in Martin on Jan. 25, 71-66 in Cookeville on Feb. 20). The Skyhawks then exacted revenge via another close call - managing a 70-67 triumph in the first round of the OVC Championship tournament in Evansville, Ind.
AJ Hopkins tossed in 16 points during UT Martin's trip to Cookeville last season while Andrija Bukumirović collected 14 points with eight rebounds in Martin to help lead the Skyhawks against Tennessee Tech last season. Lamine Niang (eight points, seven rebounds, three blocks) also performed well against the Golden Eagles in the opening round of the 2025 OVC Championship bracket.
UT Martin (8-4, 0-1 OVC) is coming off a 78-71 setback at Tennessee State in its OVC opener on Thursday. In that game, the Skyhawks only trailed for 11:14 of clock time and held a 68-64 advantage with 2:42 remaining. However, the host Tigers scored 14 of the next 15 points down the stretch. The trio of Matas Deniusas (17 points, career-best nine rebounds), Bukumirović (16 points) and Filip Radaković (tied a career-high with 16 points) combined for 69 percent of UT Martin's scoring output.
Tennessee Tech (6-6, 1-0 OVC) dispatched Southeast Missouri by an 85-74 margin in its league opener on Thursday, knocking down 35 of its 42 free throw tries (83.3 percent) on the way to the win. Old Dominion transfer Dani Pounds had 22 points to guide five Golden Eagles who scored in double figures.
Tennessee Tech junior forward JaJuan Nicholls averaged 13.3 points on 66.7 percent (18-of-27) shooting against the Skyhawks last season, including 23 points in the Jan. 25 outing in Martin.
