BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Matas Deniusas, a forward on the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team, has been selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for the third time in as many tries to start the 2025-26 campaign.
Deniusas joins Myles Taylor (Dec. 12-26, 2011) and Marquis Weddle (Nov. 19-Dec. 3, 2007) as the only players in Skyhawk history to win OVC Freshman of the Week accolades in three consecutive weeks.
Hailing from Vilnius, Lithuania, Deniusas averaged 12.0 points and 4.0 rebounds over three games while shooting 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the free throw line. His busy week was capped off with a spot on the nine-member Pensacola Invitational All-Tournament Team yesterday.
Deniusas started his week with 11 points in just 22 minutes at Florida State last Tuesday and followed that with career-highs of 20 points and seven rebounds in Saturday's Pensacola Invitational opener against Prairie View A&M. That marked the second time this season that the 6-9, 220-pounder had topped UT Martin in scoring. He also added five points in 20 minutes against Southern Miss on Sunday to round out yet another productive week.
Through six games of his collegiate career, Deniusas ranks second in the OVC in free throw percentage (.867) and 11th in scoring (13.0 points per outing) while adding 5.2 rebounds per contest.
The Skyhawks return to the hardwood tomorrow night, hosting Brescia for a 6 p.m. tipoff at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
