MARTIN, Tenn. – After a dominant road performance in last week's contest, the University of Tennessee at Martin football program was named the FCS National Team of the Week by Stats Perform.
As winners of four consecutive league championships, UT Martin put themselves back in title contention by posting a dominant road victory over OVC-Big South co-leader Gardner-Webb by a final score of 37-7. The Skyhawks gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their first loss against a FCS team this season after forcing four turnovers and holding the home squad to season lows in points, rushing yards and total offense.
UT Martin commanded the game in all three phases of the game as the ground attack posted a season-best 244 rushing yards while the offense punched in four total touchdowns. Defensively, the squad tallied three interceptions and recovered a fumble to stifle an explosive Gardner-Webb offense while special teams made four field goals and placed both of its punt attempts inside the 20-yard line.
Some standout individual performances came from quarterback Jase Bauer and cornerback JaMichael McGoy, Jr. with a pair of record-setting outings. Bauer set a new program single-game record for completion percentage (93.8%) after completing 15-of-16 pass attempts, besting a previous record set back in 2012. Meanwhile, McGoy tallied two pass breakups and an interception on the way to setting a new program record for career pass breakups with his total sitting at 37 through 47 career games.
UT Martin will enjoy its bye week before returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 against OVC-Big South rival Eastern Illinois on the road.
