MARTIN, Tenn. – The battle-tested University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team returns to the hardwood tomorrow when it takes on Southeast Missouri in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup. Tipoff on Thursday, Jan. 30 is set for 7:30 p.m. in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Skyhawks have won nine of the last 10 outings against the Redhawks, including a 3-1 mark in the Show Me Center during that span. UT Martin will go for a season sweep against Southeast Missouri as the Skyhawks claimed a 66-63 triumph back on Jan. 4. In that game, UT Martin led for 38:22 of clock time and was paced by double-digit scorers Tarence Guinyard (14 points), Carlos Cortijo (13), Andrija Bukumirović (11) and Vladimer Salaridze (10 points with game-highs of 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals).
A pair of slim overtime setbacks last week have left the Skyhawks (9-12, 5-5 OVC) hungry to get back in the win column. Salaridze averaged 23.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in outings against Tennessee State (lost 81-80) and Tennessee Tech (lost 89-85) as UT Martin has now played five overtime games this season (all since Dec. 11).
Contrasting styles will be on full display during this matchup as the Skyhawks rank eighth in NCAA Division I basketball in three-point attempts (30.8 per game) while sinking an OVC-best 9.8 trifectas per game. Meanwhile, the Redhawks lead the OVC and rank fourth nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense (.278).
Southeast Missouri (11-10, 6-4 OVC) is coming off a convincing 72-51 road victory at Western Illinois on Saturday. Brendan Terry (game-high 19 points), Rob Martin (16 points) and TJ Biel (10 points, game-best seven rebounds) paced the Redhawks. Braxton Stacker (game-high 22 points off the bench) and Teddy Washington, Jr. (15 points, team-best eight rebounds) guided Southeast Missouri in its early season meeting against UT Martin.
