MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off its largest comeback victory in over a decade, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team will look to keep the momentum rolling tomorrow when it hosts the SIUE Cougars in an Ohio Valley Conference tilt. The game will serve as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's basketball squad and will tip off at 3:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (8-10, 4-3 OVC) erased a 17-point second-half deficit on Thursday against Eastern Illinois, emerging victorious by a 68-63 tally. Vladimer Salaridze (career-best 23 points) and Tarence Guinyard (all 18 points in the second half) served as the de facto closers for UT Martin down the stretch, combining to outscore the entire Panther squad (27 to 26) in the final 20 minutes. Guinyard was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds, rallying the Skyhawks to the program's first win in regulation after trailing by at least 17 points since a 75-73 win at Arkansas State on Nov. 17, 2014.
UT Martin has won three straight decisions over SIUE as this matchup features the OVC leader in overall scoring margin (Cougars at 7.2) and league-only scoring margin (Skyhawks at 5.4). This showdown additionally features two of the league's best backcourt standouts in SIUE graduate Ray'Sean Taylor and Guinyard. Taylor is the active OVC career scoring leader with 1,641 points while currently topping the league in scoring (18.2 points per contest), three-point field goals made (3.0 per outing) and free throw percentage (.863). Meanwhile, Guinyard's 19.0 points per game in OVC play ranks second (only behind Taylor's 20.0 points per game average) as the UT Martin speedster also ranks third in three-point field goal percentage (.439) in league competition.
The Cougars (12-6, 5-2 OVC) enter on a five-game winning streak, outlasting Tennessee State by an 87-80 score in double overtime on Thursday. Brian Taylor led SIUE with 23 points while Ray'Sean Taylor chipped in 21 points for the Cougars, who lead the OVC in scoring defense (65.6 points per contest).
