MARTIN, Tenn. – A dozen days after the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team put forth a record-setting effort for its first Ohio Valley Conference victory under head coach Jeremy Shulman, the Skyhawks begin its home league slate against Little Rock.
UT Martin returns to the hardwood for the first time since a convincing 77-46 road triumph at Southern Indiana on Dec. 21. In that game, the Skyhawks' 31-point margin of victory was their largest ever against an OVC opponent while their 19 treys were the most against a NCAA Division I opponent in program history.
Tarence Guinyard (28 points, 7-of-10 shooting from three-point range) and Josué Grullon (20 points, 6-for-9 from three-point land) combined for more points than the entire Screaming Eagles squad in that Dec. 21 contest. Grullon ranks fifth in the OVC in scoring at 16.8 points per contest while Guinyard's 16.3 points per game average is good enough for seventh in the league. Collectively, Grullon and Guinyard are the highest scoring duo in the OVC at 33.1 points per outing.
UT Martin has found a groove over its last five games, going 3-2 over that span with both setbacks coming in overtime on the road. Over that stretch, the Skyhawks have shot 41 percent (68-for-166) from beyond the three-point arc while outrebounding its opponents by an average of 17 boards per game. The latter statistic has helped the Skyhawks rank sixth nationally in rebounding (43.54 per contest).
The Trojans top the OVC in blocked shots (5.42 per game) and opponent field goal percentage (.376) despite the season-long absence of reigning All-OVC first teamer KK Robinson due to injury. In its OVC opener on Dec. 19, Little Rock held SIUE to 32.2 percent shooting (19-of-59) in a 60-56 home triumph. LSU transfer Mwani Wilkinson tossed in 16 points while Johnathan Lawson (12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists) flirted with a triple-double for the preseason OVC favorites.
