EVANSVILLE, Ind.- After enduring an hour-long delay because of a rainy monsoon this evening, the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team fell 4-1 against Southern Indiana at Strassweg Field.
Caroline Moore scored her first goal of the season for the Skyhawks while Izzy Patterson (two shots, one assist) and Alberte Amby were each credited with an assist on the play. Unni Wolf (one shot), Peyton Cook (one shot on goal), Parker Gelinas (one shot), Shayla Addington (one shot on goal), Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles (one shot) and Maren Cain (one shot) launched attempts toward the net as UT Martin directed seven of its nine shots in the opening half.
Mac Titus (45 minutes played) and Jordyn Riffle (45 minutes) each saw time in goal, combining for four saves on the night. Addington, Gelinas, Patterson, Wolf and Cook logged all 90 minutes on the pitch for UT Martin (2-5-3, 1-1-0 Ohio Valley Conference).
Titus made a pair of saves in the opening two minutes before the host Screaming Eagles (2-6-3, 1-0-1 OVC) got on the scoreboard in the 15th minute. Cook had a shot on goal and a potential game-tying Gelinas attempt in the 20th minute hit the goal frame before Southern Indiana struck again for a goal a little over two minutes later.
The Skyhawks peppered back-to-back shots on goal in the span of 47 seconds in the 39th minute but the Screaming Eagles were there for saves in both instances. Southern Indiana added a goal with just 54 seconds remaining before the halftime break to take a 3-0 advantage.
Riffle snagged a pair of saves in the 57th and 62nd minutes but the Screaming Eagles got back on the scoreboard with 26:01 remaining.
A Nashville, Tenn. native, Moore checked into the match in the 66th minute and immediately made an impact – finding the back of the net in the 73rd minute courtesy of assists from Patterson (team-best fourth of the season) and Amby (first collegiate point).
"Credit to Southern Indiana," UT Martin head coach Mike Varga said. "They out worked us from the start and we didn't respond well. In a match with difficult weather conditions like we faced today, you have to be prepared for a physical match and we struggles and I'll take the blame for that. We need to put this one behind us and get ready for a talented team on Sunday."
UT Martin hosts a home match for the first time in three weeks when it hosts OVC preseason favorite Tennessee Tech on Sunday, Sept. 29. First touch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
