
Four UT Martin Athletics Programs Earn 2023-24 OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – More history was made for the University of Tennessee at Martin athletic department in 2023-24 as the Skyhawks claimed four separate Ohio Valley Conference Team Academic Achievement Awards, the league announced today.
UT Martin's men's basketball, football, golf and volleyball programs each claimed the prestigious OVC Team Academic Achievement Award, presented annually in each Conference-sponsored sport to the member institution's team with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 Grade Point Average or higher.
Today's announcement marks the second-most OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards in school history, trailing only the five Skyhawk squads who brought home the hardware in 2005-06. UT Martin was the only OVC school to win four different OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards in 2023-24, edging out three honors apiece for Southeast Missouri and Western Illinois.
The Skyhawk men's basketball program nabbed its first-ever OVC Team Academic Achievement Award, placing 36 percent (5-of-14) of their roster above the 3.25 GPA threshold under head coach Ryan Ridder.
UT Martin's football program won this award for the second time in school history (also winning in 2005-06). Head coach Jason Simpson presided over a roster that produced 29 out of 88 student-athletes (33 percent) at the 3.25 GPA mark or better.
Head coach Austin Swafford directed the Skyhawk golf program to a 3.55 cumulative GPA in 2023-24, generating 89 percent (8-of-9) of his roster on the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll. This marks the second such award for the UT Martin golf program, who also won in 2020-21.
The Skyhawk volleyball program additionally seized this award for the second time in school history, also winning in 2014-15. Head coach Jaclynn Wilson saw 12 of her 14 student-athletes (86 percent) claim OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll status on the way to a 3.57 cumulative GPA in 2023-24.
This award rounds out a week of OVC announcements regarding 2023-24 academic year honors. Last Friday, it was revealed that UT Martin won a school-record 31 OVC Academic Medals of Honor for perfect 4.0 GPA's. Yesterday, the OVC publicized that 168 Skyhawks secured OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll awards for a 3.25 GPA or higher.
