MARTIN, Tenn. – Three top-10 equestrian programs will invade the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex this weekend as the University of Tennessee at Martin hosts three Eastern College Athletic Conference meets.
The No. 10 ranked Skyhawks (1-1 in ECAC standings), No. 8 Delaware State (3-0 ECAC) and No. 9 UC Davis (2-0 ECAC) will all face each other on Friday, Feb. 9 through Saturday, Feb. 10. This weekend's results could bring along significant postseason implications, specifically for the ECAC Championship – slated to be held in Davis, Calif. on March 25-27.
UT Martin is 15-7-3 all-time against Delaware State but is looking to avenge a slim 10-7 loss against the Hornets in their fall finale. In home meets, the Skyhawks are 6-2 in the series history against Delaware State but have not faced the Hornets at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex since a 13-6 triumph on March 12, 2021. UT Martin is 1-2 all-time against UC Davis and are hosting the Aggies for the first time since Feb. 11, 2022 – an 11-8 Skyhawk victory. That meet will also serve as a rematch of the 2023 ECAC Championship finals as UC Davis narrowly edged out UT Martin by a 10-8 margin in Brookings, SD.
Earlier this season at Delaware State, the Skyhawks outscored the Hornets by a 4-3 margin in the Western discipline. Lexi Bailey's 74.5 points in reining were good enough to claim MOP accolades while Logan Putvinski also scored a head-to-head win in the same event. Ava Newsom and Mia McAfoos additionally delivered points for UT Martin in horsemanship. Gabby Adams' 82-point MOP effort in fences guided the Skyhawks' Jumping Seat discipline, which also saw Sydney Hott and Elizabeth Becker claim wins in fences. However, the host Delaware State squad swept all five points in flat.
In last season's ECAC Championship finals, UT Martin returners Haley Kane (fences/flat) and Kate Davis (horsemanship/reining) were responsible for two points apiece while Hott (fences) and Putvinski (reining) also notched victories for the Skyhawks against UC Davis.
Action on Friday will begin at 10 a.m. while UT Martin's meet on Saturday will start at noon, weather permitting. Live scoring throughout all three meets can be found at the link above.
