2/16/2024 8:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will look to get back to its winning ways when welcoming red-hot Morehead State to the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Saturday, Feb. 17. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (10-14, 7-6 OVC) have dropped back-to-back contests over the past week, falling to Western Illinois (71-61) before coming up short against Southern Indiana (73-67) on Thursday evening. In the most recent outing for the Skyhawks, the Arkansas tandem of Kenley McCarn and Josie Storey each scored 20 points in the matchup while Anaya Brown added 18 points and eight rebounds.
The squad now looks to right the ship as they prepare for the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship in three weeks and looks to improve their overall seed. UT Martin currently sits in a tie for sixth place while sitting just one game out of second place. Up next for the Skyhawks is Morehead State who has climbed the league standings after wins in three of its last four games and currently sits in a three-way tie for second place.
The two squads met one month ago in Morehead, Ky. with the home team picking up a sizeable 56-38 victory. UT Martin struggled offensively by shooting just 31.7 percent from the field while being plagued by 21 turnovers. Meanwhile, Morehead State closed out the game by shooting 52 percent in the second half and stole the program's first regular season win against the Skyhawks since the 2018-19 season.
The Eagles (13-11, 8-5 OVC) boast a balanced offense which is led by reigning OVC Defensive Player of the Year Veronica Charles who paces the team in points (13.4 ppg), assists (4.3 apg) and steals (2.5 spg). She is supported by Katie Novik (11.0 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Hallie Rhodes (10.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg) who also score in double figures on a nightly basis.
Saturday's contest marks the 62nd meeting between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a narrow 31-30 all-time record in head-to-head matchups. While the Eagles have won the last two meetings against the Skyhawks, the home squad has not lost in the Elam Center since Jan. 13, 2018.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action live from courtside. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
