The No. 18 ranked University of Tennessee at Martin football program returns home this week to play host to Big South-OVC Football Association rival Tennessee Tech in a battle for the Sgt. York Trophy on Saturday, Nov. 16. The contest also marks the program's annual Military Appreciation Game with kickoff from Hardy Graham Stadium slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
UT Martin will show its appreciation for our active duty and military veterans by providing complimentary admission in conjunction with Veterans Day and its Military Appreciation Game. Military assets will also be on-site while UT Martin cadets will receive their Oath during the contest.
The contest marks the third and final game of the annual Sgt. York Trophy series. The trophy is awarded to the winner of the season football series between the Ohio Valley Conference schools located in the state of Tennessee - including Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin. With both program's knocking off Tennessee State earlier this season, the winner of Saturday's game will finish the series with a perfect 2-0 record and obtain bragging rights throughout the offseason. UT Martin has claimed the Sgt. York Trophy every year since 2018 and 11 times overall. The Skyhawks boast a 36-13 record in the series - the best mark of the three schools - and have won outright or shared the traveling trophy in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The No. 18 Skyhawks (7-3, 5-1 Big South-OVC) saw their national rankings climb in both polls after securing their sixth consecutive victory last weekend at Charleston Southern. UT Martin flirted with 500 yards of total offense while forcing three turnovers in a 40-14 victory. During the team's six-game winning streak, the Skyhawks are outscoring opponents by an average of 20.8 points per game – while jumping back into a tie for first place in the Association standings in a quest for four consecutive league championships.
UT Martin will lean on its homefield advantage against visiting Tennessee Tech. The Skyhawks have boasted a 17-2 record at home over the past four seasons – including a perfect 13-0 mark against conference opponents in Hardy Graham Stadium.
Tennessee Tech (5-5, 4-2 Big South-OVC) will provide a challenge for the home team as it enters the contest wining three consecutive games – including a 27-7 non-conference win at Samford last weekend. The Golden Eagles are under first-year head coach Bobby Wilder who previously served in a similar role at Old Dominion for 11 years. Tech ranks fifth nationally in rushing defense and 11th in both turnovers gained and tackles for loss.
UT Martin is seeking to even up the all-time series which sees Tennessee Tech hold a narrow 22-21-2 advantage in a back-and-forth history which dates back nearly 100 years to 1926. The Skyhawks have controlled the series in recent history by winning 11 consecutive matchups since 2013 – beating the Golden Eagles by an average of 21.6 points per game.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while locally fans can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Davis Gregory (play-by-play), John Hatler (analyst) and Chris Brinkley (analyst) call the action. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
