BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference named University of Tennessee at Martin junior guard Josué Grullon as its Newcomer of the Week for the sport of men's basketball this afternoon.
Grullon becomes the 32nd player in school history to earn OVC Newcomer of the Week accolades. The 6-5, 195-pounder was an offensive juggernaut for the Skyhawks this week as UT Martin was the only OVC team to go 2-0 during Opening Week.
The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native poured in 37 points in 43 minutes of playing time while shooting 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from three-point range and 80 percent (4-for-5) from the free throw line. Grullon averaged 18.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in wins over Illinois State (Nov. 4) and Kentucky Christian (Nov. 7).
Grullon tossed in a game-high 18 points to go along with nine rebounds in 27 minutes in the season opener at Illinois State. He essentially iced the game with three clutch free throws in the final seven seconds of the 67-65 triumph after the host Redbirds trimmed their deficit to just one point.
Three days later in the home opener against Kentucky Christian, Grullon collected 19 points in only 16 minutes of playing time. He swished five treys in 10 attempts while tacking on five rebounds.
Grullon currently ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in three-point field goals per game (3.5, third), scoring (18.5 points per game, fifth), rebounding (7.0 per game, sixth) and three-point field goal percentage (.438, sixth).
The Skyhawks are back in action this evening, traveling to North Alabama at 6 p.m.
