BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference unveiled its updated standings for the league's 2022-23 Commissioner's Cup following the winter championship season and the University of Tennessee at Martin is in third place.
The Skyhawks have accumulated 57 points so far during the academic year, trailing only co-leaders Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech (65.5 points apiece). Eastern Illinois (56 points) and Little Rock (46.5) round out the top-five and are followed by Tennessee State (41.5), Morehead State (36.5), Southern Indiana (35.5), SIUE (32.5) and Lindenwood (26).
A total of five UT Martin athletic programs have contributed points since the fall championship season update where the Skyhawks ranked second. Men's basketball (7 points), women's basketball (6), men's indoor track (4), women's indoor track (3) and rifle (1) have added to UT Martin's point tally – which already included volleyball (10), football (9.5), men's cross country (9), women's cross country (5) and soccer (2.5).
The most OVC Commissioner's Cup points for any Skyhawk season came in 2016-17 when UT Martin piled up 89 points. Just last season, the Skyhawks recorded their best OVC Commissioner's Cup finish in school history, placing fifth in the final standings with 83.49 points.
First awarded after the 2008-09 season, the OVC Commissioner's Cup is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in Conference-sponsored championships and is annually given to one member institution. Points are distributed based on the number of schools that sponsor the sport while each school is required to count 13 total sports. Schools are required to count point totals for men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, one male track and once female track (track includes cross country, indoor track or outdoor track) while schools that sponsor football are also required to count it. Each school's cumulative score is made up of its next highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender.
The OVC releases updated Commissioner's Cup standings at the conclusion of the fall and winter championship seasons. The final results are unveiled following the spring championship season.
