EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The quarterfinal round of the 2023 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Basketball Championship has been set as the No. 3 seed University of Tennessee at Martin will take on SIUE on Thursday, March 2. Tipoff from the Ford Center is set for 9 p.m. on ESPN+.
The No. 6 seed Cougars advanced to the quarterfinals after a 68-54 victory on Thursday over Southern Indiana. Damarco Minor accounted for a game-high 27 points while Shamar Wright and Jalen Hodge each scored 10 points apiece for SIUE, who won its first-ever OVC Championship tournament game. The Cougars overcame a 30-29 halftime deficit by holding the Screaming Eagles to 29.2 percent (19-for-65) shooting.
The Skyhawks and SIUE split their two regular season contests, each winning on their own home court. UT Martin fell 89-75 on the road on Feb. 2 but avenged that loss with a 90-84 triumph in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center two weeks later.
Jordan Sears paced the Skyhawks in scoring (24.5 points per game), rebounding (7.5 per contest) and assists (3.5 per outing) against the Cougars this season. Desmond Williams also averaged 13.0 points per game while shooting 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from three-point range and a perfect 100 percent (8-for-8) from the free throw line. Parker Stewart was out with an injury in the Feb. 2 road game at SIUE but scored 18 points on 44.4 percent shooting (4-for-9) from beyond the three-point arc in the home win.
This will be UT Martin's first meeting against SIUE in the OVC Championship tournament. The Skyhawks are 1-1 all-time in OVC Championship tournament games played in the Ford Center (both games occurring during the 2019 version of the event).
