MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time since 2019, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team will chase after an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship as the Skyhawks are the No. 3 seed in this week's event held at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
UT Martin (18-13) earned a bye into the quarterfinal round of the OVC Championship bracket and will learn its opponent late tomorrow as the Skyhawks will face the winner of No. 6 seed SIUE (18-13) and No. 7 seed Southern Indiana (16-15). It will mark the Skyhawks' first meeting against either the Cougars or Screaming Eagles in the postseason as tipoff is set for Thursday, March 2 at 9 p.m. on ESPN+.
This marks the 14th all-time OVC Championship tournament appearance for UT Martin but first for the program as the No. 3 seed. The Skyhawks will look to become the first No. 3 seed to cut down the nets since Belmont accomplished that feat in 2015.
UT Martin has won at least one game in three straight and six of its last eight appearances in the OVC Championship Tournament dating back to 2008. That includes a spot in the league finals in both 2016 and 2017, the furthest that any Skyhawk team has advanced in this event.
This year's UT Martin squad has excelled under second-year head coach Ryan Ridder, who oversaw a 10-win increase from 2021-22. The Skyhawks posted their third-most OVC victories in school history (10) and defeated every league member at least once for just the second time in school history (also occurring during the 2008-09 OVC regular season championship season).
UT Martin leads the OVC in scoring offense (81.1 points per game), scoring margin (+5.7), field goal percentage (.462), field goal percentage defense (.422), three-point field goal percentage defense (.320), rebounding (39.4 per contest) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2). The Skyhawks also rank fifth in NCAA Division I in defensive rebounds per outing (28.87) and 10th in fastbreak points (15.29 per game).
Connor Onion and Bob Belvin will be on the ESPN+ call for Thursday's game while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and David Williams (color) will also broadcast the contest live from courtside locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM.
