MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off an exciting Ohio Valley Conference opener, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad looks to keep the momentum rolling when it pays a visit to Tennessee Tech tomorrow. Tipoff time from Cookeville is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
These two teams met three times last season, including a 78-63 Golden Eagle win in the OVC Championship semifinals. In that game, KK Curry notched a season-high 21 points (on 9-of-14 shooting) with nine rebounds while Jordan Sears tossed in 15 points in a contest that was even at 26-all at the halftime break.
Sears also had a big outing (12 points, game-high eight assists) in the Skyhawks' 100-91 triumph in Cookeville last season as UT Martin connected on 59.3 percent (35-for-59) of its field goal tries - including a 10-for-15 mark from three-point range. Koby Jeffries (career-best 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting) found success against Tennessee Tech in the first meeting between these two sides in 2022-23, an 84-80 Golden Eagle overtime win in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
Of course, no Skyhawk has more experience in the Hooper Eblen Center than junior forward Kenny White, Jr., who spent his first two collegiate seasons (2020-22) playing in a Tennessee Tech uniform. In 17 career games at the Eblen Center, White is averaging 9.2 points per outing while shooting 37.5 percent (21-for-56) from three-point range.
UT Martin (8-6, 1-0 OVC) is coming off a 91-75 victory at Tennessee State on Thursday. Issa Muhammad (career-high 23 points), Jacob Crews (19), Sears (14) and White (13) each scored in double digits to guide the Skyhawks to their third OVC-opening road win in the last four seasons.
The Golden Eagles (5-9, 0-1 OVC) fell by a narrow 81-75 margin to Little Rock in their league opener on Thursday. Josiah Davis (20 points), David Early (15), Jayvis Harvey (13), Rodney Johnson, Jr. (12) and Diante Wood (11) all chipped in notable scoring efforts but Tennessee Tech shot 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from three-point land.
