MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad will square off against its third and final first-time opponent on the 2023-24 schedule when the Skyhawks take on the NC State Wolfpack tomorrow. Tipoff time on the ACC Network is set for 6 p.m. CT.
UT Martin head coach Ryan Ridder returns to where his coaching roots were planted as his first gig came as an assistant at North Raleigh Christian Academy during the 2008-09 campaign. He also later spent three seasons (2010-13) as an assistant coach at nearby Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC.
The Skyhawks (6-4) are coming off a 110-52 home victory over Ecclesia on Sunday, accumulating triple digits on the scoreboard for the third time this season. Jalen Myers was responsible for a season-high 21 points, six rebounds and a career-best five assists while Sebastian Mendoza (career-highs of 18 points, 11 rebounds) recorded the first double-double of his collegiate career. Jordan Sears (17 points), Desmond Williams (15) and KK Curry (10) also reached double figures in the scoring column.
Over the weekend, UT Martin overtook the top spot in the NCAA Division I rankings in defensive rebounding (currently at 34.2 boards per game). The Skyhawks also entered the week ranking in the top-25 in the country in scoring offense (87.0 points per contest), three-point field goals made (10.0 per outing) and total rebounding per game (45.3).
A NCAA Tournament participant a year ago, NC State (6-2) boasts five players who average at least 10 points per game. That list includes Butler transfer Jayden Taylor, who pumped in 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting in just 23 minutes in the Wolfpack's last outing - a 93-61 triumph over Maryland-Eastern Shore last Wednesday. In that game, six total NC State players scored in double digits as the Wolfpack connected on 59.3 percent (35-for-59) of their field goal tries.
