
UT MARTIN RIFLE CONTINUES UPWARD TREND IN FIRST OF TWO DAYS AT JACKSONVILLE STATE

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – New season-high aggregate and smallbore team scores plus a trio of individual career-highs were achieved by the University of Tennessee at Martin rifle squad today in a matchup against Jacksonville State.
The Skyhawks tallied a season-best 4,659 aggregate points thanks to a season-high 2,321 smallbore score to go along with 2,338 air rifle points. Jacksonville State compiled 4,670 combined points (2,366 air rifle, 2,304 smallbore) to barely edge out UT Martin.
Alayna Walther registered the highest aggregate score of all 10 participants from both teams, topping the Skyhawks for the fourth match in a row with a season-best 1,176 points. The junior from Avella, Pa. set a career-high with 586 smallbore points while posting a season-best score of 590 in air rifle.
Walther's career-high smallbore score marked the fifth time in five opportunities that she has paced UT Martin in that category. Nick Fares ranked second on the squad with 582 points with Joey Kovach following closely behind courtesy of a career-best 581 points. Also setting a career-high in smallbore was freshman Aubrey Summers, whose 572 points were 23 points better than her previous best tally.
In air rifle, Walther's score led the Skyhawks for the fourth straight match. Summers came on strong for a career-high 589 (13 points higher than her previous high) while Fares (581) and Kovach (578) completed the team scoring.
Jesse Chamberlain was also a part of the UT Martin lineup in both guns, collecting scores of 560 in smallbore and equaling a season-high with 575 points in air rifle.
Fares' 1,163 aggregate points ranked second on the squad while Summers' 1,161 aggregate score was a season-high tally by a whopping 39 points. Kovach earned 1,159 total points while Chamberlain's 1,135 combined points were a season-best.
The Skyhawks are one of four teams to take part in the JSU Invitational tomorrow as UT Martin begins its participation in the event at 1 p.m.
