MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team was responsible for another strong performance today as the Skyhawks took on Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State in a neutral-site match.
Exactly seven days after opening the season with 4,612 aggregate points at the same venue, UT Martin increased that tally to a score of 4,620 today. That included 2,329 air rifle points – 22 points more than its season-opening score in that category – and 2,291 points in smallbore. Morehead State managed 4,667 points (2,312 smallbore, 2,355 air rifle) to claim the narrow win.
Junior Alayna Walther led the Skyhawks across the board today, earning team-high scores in aggregate (1,165), smallbore (579) and air rifle (586). The Avella, Pa. native paced UT Martin in smallbore for the second consecutive match while accruing the exact same aggregate score as last week's season opener at Murray State.
In addition to Walther, the Skyhawk smallbore lineup included Nick Fares (575), Joey Kovach (574), Jesse Chamberlain (563) and Jeffrey Bourassa (553).
UT Martin's air rifle lineup consisted of Walther, Fares (583), Kovach (580) plus career-high scores out of Bourassa (580) and Aubrey Summers (576).
Summers also competed as an individual in smallbore (546) while Chamberlain shot unattached from the team scoring in air rifle (568).
Following Walther in aggregate scoring was Fares (1,158 points), Kovach (1,154), Bourassa (1,133), Chamberlain (1,131) and Summers (1,122).
The Skyhawks will now take a monthlong break from official competition before resuming the fall slate on Nov. 10-11 for a road match against the same Morehead State squad.
