OVC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP UP NEXT FOR UT MARTIN

MARTIN, Tenn.- The 2023 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship is set for this Saturday at the Eagle Trace Golf Course in Morehead, Ky. The men's 8K race will open up the day at 8 a.m. CT with the women's 6K race scheduled for 9 a.m. CT.

Saturday will mark the sixth time MSU has hosted the meet and the second time that Eagle Trace will be the championship course. The event is free to the public and is located at 1275 Eagle Dr, Morehead, KY 40351. UT Martin's men finished second in last year's race which marked the highest finish in program history. The women wrapped up the championship with a sixth-place finish led by then-sophomore, Lydia Tankersley (17^th, 23:03.4).

Sophomore Sam Shuman has led the men's squad the past two meets with an 18^th place (25:28.2) finish in Evansville, and then earned 17^th at the Live in Lou XC Classic with a personal record of 25:09.3 in the 8K. Reigning OVC Freshman of the Year Luke Johnson has run strong this season with three top-30 performances which included an OVC Runner of the Week honor after his PR of 20:39.9 in the four-mile at the City Auto Memphis Twilight XC Classic.

Junior Hudson Hall has joined Johnson and Shuman in the scoring five with multiple top-50 finishes including a season-best 25^th to close out the regular season, while freshman Angus Monro has impressed in his first year as a Skyhawk with an 8K PR of 26:16.5 in the John McNichols Invitational.

On the women's side, Brooke Skoog has led the team with back-to-back top-40 placings to close out the season which included a PR in the 5K (18.43.4). Maggie Brown has been another consistent scorer for UT Martin, marking two PRs in both the 6K (23:01.4) and 5K (18:55.9). Sophomore Gabby Brown is projected to join Skoog and Brown in the scoring five, the Dexter, Mo. native nailed a PR of 20:23.0 in the 5k at the Live in Lou Classic.

The OVC Athletes and Freshmen of the Year, which are determined by coaches vote, will be announced on Friday night. The Coach of the Year, Athletes of the Championship and All-OVC honors will be presented following Saturday's Championship.
