MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off its best defensive effort of the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team looks to continue its winning ways at home against Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri. Tipoff on Thursday, Jan. 5 is set for 8 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's basketball game as the backend of a doubleheader).
The Skyhawks (9-6, 1-1 OVC) cranked up the intensity down the stretch last Saturday, holding Morehead State to just one field goal over the final nine minutes in a 64-57 victory. UT Martin stifled the visiting Eagles to 30.8 percent shooting for the game (its lowest for an OVC opponent since Eastern Illinois shot 28.1 percent on Jan. 28, 2021) and conceded its fewest points by any Division I opponent in 2022-23.
Jordan Sears pumped in season-highs of 18 points and five assists during the Skyhawks' victory over Morehead State while KK Curry went off for 14 points and a career-best 16 rebounds. Curry became just the seventh UT Martin player since 2008-09 to haul in at least 16 rebounds in an OVC contest.
Saturday's triumph was also the eighth straight win inside the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center to start the season, setting a record for the program's NCAA Division I Era (since 1992). The Skyhawks have won four consecutive home outings against Southeast Missouri and seven of the last eight home decisions dating back to 2015 (the only setback coming in overtime during the 2017-18 campaign).
KJ Simon excelled against the Redhawks last season, averaging 21.5 points while shooting a sizzling 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the floor over two games.
Southeast Missouri (6-9, 1-1 OVC) snapped an eight-game losing skid on Saturday with an impressive 82-73 home triumph over SIUE, who currently leads the OVC in winning percentage (.667). Phillip Russell's 19 points and game-high seven assists guided a Redhawk squad that never trailed in the contest. Chris Harris (14 points), Dylan Branson (14 points) and Josh Earley (12 points) also scored in double figures while Georgetown transfer Kobe Clark grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Chris Brinkley will call all the action live on ESPN+ and WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, in addition to a link to live stats, can be found at the top of the webpage.
