The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will hit the road for back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference matchups beginning at SIUE on Thursday, Feb. 2. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (8-12, 5-5 OVC) open the month of February on the road with an early test against SIUE. UT Martin pulled off a season-sweep of Southern Indiana with yet another second half comeback. Much like in the previous matchup which saw the Skyhawk surge back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter, UT Martin overcame a 14-point hole by using a 20-2 run in the third quarter and never looked back on the way to a 68-56 victory.
With strong performances against Southern Indiana, the Skyhawk pair of Seygan Robins and Sharnecce Currie-Jelks garnered OVC weekly honors. Robins picked up her first OVC Player of the Week honor after scoring a career-high 30 points in the win – including a stretch which saw her score 23 points in the second half and go 6-for-6 from beyond the arc. Currie-Jelks garnered her fifth OVC Freshman of the Week accolade after reaching double figures in the scoring column for the 12th time while adding 14 points and six rebounds in the victory.
SIUE enters the matchup with a 6-15 overall record while going 5-5 in league play. The Cougars had won three consecutive OVC contests before suffering a road sweep last weekend with losses to Tennessee Tech (89-62) and Morehead State (64-60).
The Cougars have two players which average scoring in double figures. Ajulu Thatha leads the way by averaging 12.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per game along with recently being named OVC Co-Player of the Week after posting 24.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game last week. Sofie Lowis is also a consistent performer with 11.7 points per game.
Thursday's contest marks the 33rd meeting between the two programs with UT Martin leading the series 22-10. The two teams split last season's regular season series as each squad won on its opponent's home floor while SIUE narrowly escaped the first round of the OVC Basketball Championship with an 86-84 victory.
This game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and David Williams (color) will call all the action live from courtside locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link to follow along through live stats - are located above.
