SKYHAWK MEN'S BASKETBALL CONCLUDES ROAD STRETCH TOMORROW IN SEARCH OF A SEASON SWEEP AGAINST SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
1/18/2023 9:31:00 AM | Men's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – A road swing that has led the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball through three different states wraps up with an Ohio Valley Conference showdown against Southeast Missouri on Thursday, Jan. 19. Tipoff time from Cape Girardeau, Mo. is set for 7 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's game as the backend of a doubleheader).
These two teams just met back on Jan. 5 as the Skyhawks defended their home court with an 87-82 victory. UT Martin never trailed and led by as many as 19 points with under nine minutes remaining but the Redhawks kept chipping away and eventually pulled within just two points with 45 seconds to go. The Skyhawks made three of four free throws from that point forward to seal the win. Parker Stewart (team-best 25 points) and KK Curry (season-high 15 points, game-best 13 rebounds) led the way for UT Martin, who also saw KJ Simon (11 points), Koby Jeffries (11) and Jordan Sears (10) score in double figures.
If the past is any indicator, another tight matchup is in store. Each of the last five games between these two squads inside the Show Me Center have been decided by seven points or less, including a pair of two-point decisions as well as an overtime contest. Overall, the Skyhawks have won five of the last six matchups against Southeast Missouri (the lone loss occurring in Cape Girardeau last year).
UT Martin will look to recover from an 80-66 road setback at Southern Indiana on Saturday. The Skyhawks shot 35 percent (21-of-60) for the contest despite quality offensive production out of Sears (17 points), Stewart (16) and Jalen Myers (10).
The Redhawks enter on a three-game winning streak, including a 91-86 triumph at Morehead State on Saturday. Phillip Russell was crowned as OVC Player of the Week after pouring in 37 points - tying the program's NCAA Division I single-game scoring record. Russell, who tossed in a game-high 28 points against UT Martin earlier this season, paces the OVC in assists (4.7 per game) and steals (2.3 per game) while ranking second in scoring (20.3 points per game) in league play.
This game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and David Williams (color) will call all the action live from courtside locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link to follow along through live stats - are located above.
