MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off one of its most successful seasons in school history, the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad begins the 2022-23 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 1 against Dartmouth. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
Ranked ninth in each of the first two National Collegiate Equestrian Association polls, the Skyhawks enter the season with lofty expectations. Last year, UT Martin set a school record with eight wins and was ranked in the NCEA top-10 poll in nine out of 10 weeks. The Skyhawks went 7-2 against Eastern College Athletic Conference competition, capturing the league's reserve championship for the second consecutive season under head coach Kim Leiter.
Tomorrow's matchup against Dartmouth begins a 13-meet regular season schedule for 2022-23. UT Martin travels to Delaware for outings against Delaware State and No. 2 TCU on Oct. 6-7 before a road contest at No. 6 Auburn on Oct. 22. The Skyhawks wrap up their fall slate with three straight home meets, taking on No. 10 South Carolina (Oct. 28), Lynchburg (Oct. 29) and South Dakota State (Nov. 18).
The spring campaign begins with a trip through the Lone Star State as UT Martin will visit No. 7 Baylor (Jan. 27) and No. 4 SMU (Jan. 28). The Skyhawks briefly return home for a Feb. 10 showdown against No. 4 SMU before heading to South Dakota for back-to-back contests against South Dakota State (Feb. 24) and UC Davis (Feb. 25). The regular season concludes with a March 10 home meet against Minnesota-Crookston before the ECAC Championship takes place in Brookings, SD on March 23-25. For the second straight year, the NCEA Championships will be held in Ocala, Fla. as this year's event is set for April 13-15.
Leiter returns 26 riders and recruited nine newcomers to join the fold for the upcoming season. Julia Gilman leads the UT Martin Jumping Seat returners as the senior out of Barrington, Ill. chalked up NCEA Ariat All-American honorable mention accolades in flat last season. She boasts 27 career victories (14 in flat, 13 in fences) and five MOP's – four of which are in flat. All-ECAC honoree Haley Kane also returns for her senior campaign as the Lexington, Ky. native has accumulated 17 career wins (10 fences, seven flat) to go along with five MOP's (three fences, two flat).
The trio of Tyler Anderson (12 career wins, two MOP's), Mahalia Alascio (nine career victories, two MOP's) and Sophia Sundem (five wins, one MOP last season in flat) also provide quality experience in the Jumping Seat discipline.
Kate Davis and Paige Benson lead all Skyhawk Western returners with four career MOP's apiece. Davis, the ECAC's Reining Freshman of the Year in 2021-22, posted 11 combined victories (six reining, five horsemanship) and three of her four MOP's in reining. Each of Benson's four career MOP's are in horsemanship, an area where UT Martin also returns 2021-22 All-ECAC recipient Emma Schaefer (four wins, two MOP's last season).
Keely Seiter (six career victories in horsemanship) joins the sophomore trio of Logan Putvinski, Aubrey Malone and Lexi Bailey – who combined for 14 victories and three MOP's in reining last year – to give the Skyhawks a stout number of returners in the Western discipline.
UT Martin is opening its season at home for the eighth time in the last nine years but this will be the first time that the Skyhawks have ever squared off against Dartmouth, an ECAC school located in Hanover, NH who competes in single discipline. Tenley Walsh is in her fourth season as head coach of the Big Green, who opened their season with a 7-1 setback against defending single discipline national champion Lynchburg last Saturday.
